Yamaha Silent Grand Pianos

Yamaha Silent Grand Pianos deliver the authentic acoustic grand experience with the advantage of Silent play via headphones. A hammer shank stopper rail rotates into position to acoustically silence the grand piano while activating contact-free key sensors to trigger an immersive grand piano sample. Additional benefits include record and play, multi instrumental voices, volume control, reverb and MIDI connectivity for production, notation and arrangement via a separate device. The latest Yamaha SC3 and SH3 Silent Systems have heightened the experience with improved responsiveness and accuracy in Silent mode.

The SC3 system is exclusive to the baby grand model GB1K-SC3 as a slightly lighter featured tone module, whilst retaining the sensor and main piano sample upgrades over prior models. The CX (5’3″-7’6″), SX (6’1″ -7’6″) and CF (6’3″-9′”) series Yamaha grand pianos feature the full specification SH3 Silent system.

Yamaha Silent Grands boast a unique quick escapement mechanism. This instantaneously adjusts the regulation of the acoustic piano action when in Silent mode so as to engage the necessary escapement of the piano action’s “jack” prior to the hammer shank meeting the silencing rail. This ensures that when the Silent grand is in standard acoustic mode, there is absolutely no interference or compromise in the piano feel. The touch is identical to a non-silent Yamaha grand when in standard mode. Upright pianos do not have this feature and so in silent mode the upright piano will have a slightly different feel to a standard equivalent as the regulation is set for silent mode at all times.

Yamaha Silent Pianos are also available as TransAcoustic™ pianos – providing the facility to route the headphone sound through transducers mounted to the piano’s soundboard. This serves to transform the piano soundboard into a speaker. See Yamaha TransAcoustic Pianos
