Yamaha Silent Grand Pianos have the integrated facility to practise via headphones
A manually operated rail obstructs the hammers from hitting the strings, thus silencing the piano. The keys, action and pedals are still operational with optical sensors under each key (hammer shank on Grands) which transmit digital 'triggers' to the onboard tone generator. A digital recording (sample) of the Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano reproduces the piano tone via headphones or possibly your external speakers at a controlled volume.

Yamaha SI Silent System
The GB1KS silent baby grand has the 'simple' silent system, offering the benefits of the basic silent concept. Digital stereo sampled Yamaha S6 grand piano with sustain pedal resonance effects, 15 mb ROM memory and 32note polyphony.
Yamaha SG Silent System
The GC1SGM model and onwards feature the advanced 'SG' silent system providing a superior piano sample, 9 additional instrument voices (inc. e-piano, harpsichord, vibraphone, organ, classical guitar, choir, strings), USB memory port, record/play feature, MIDI/to host interface. The piano sample is Advanced Wave Memory(AWM) Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano with 32-note stereo sampling, 16-note damper pedal resonance effect, 30mb ROM memory, 64note polyphony.
